21_21 DESIGN SIGHT : Defining Modernism

This is the first building that I wrote on my list of architectural reference in Japan. 21_21 Design Sight is a special museum for design, opened since 2007. It is such a thrill to witness one of Tadao Ando's masterpieces. Actually I did not expect too much on our last days in Tokyo due to our tight schedule. Coincidentally, as we were passing through the famous Roppongi Hills, we found this building.  At the time, I believed there were glitters in my eyes, seeing this building.

Collaborating with Issey Miyake, a famous fashion designer, Ando came up with a distinctive form, that contain his purpose to create “a place that fosters the public’s interest in design by arousing in them different sights and perspectives on how we can view the world and the objects surrounding us.” (source : modernica.net )

Despite it is a modern design, this museum stands perfectly along the nature. It is very sharp, clean, and giving a contemporary vibe. Concrete prefab, clear glass, and aluminum become the ultimate elements on building up the timeless design. The concrete roof is stretched out into the ground making a wonderful composition with the glass facade.
